The Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works (MRDPW) is a leading institution in the executive branch, whose mission covers comprehensive management of regional policy, territorial planning, and sectoral transformations.
The ministry is led by Minister Ivan Ivanov, supported by three deputy ministers - Vesselina Terziyska, Yura Vitanova, and Dora Yankova. The management structure includes numerous expert and advisory councils that ensure professional decision-making in various areas.
Among the strategic priorities of the MRDPW are regional development programs, including the leading "Regions Development" for the period 2021-2027 and the Operational Program "Regions in Growth". These initiatives are focused on improving economic connectivity, social infrastructure, and sustainable territorial development.
The ministry actively participates in international territorial cooperation programs, including INTERREG in its various versions - Bulgaria-Serbia, Bulgaria-North Macedonia, Bulgaria-Turkey, Greece-Bulgaria, and numerous other cross-border formats.
Key project areas include energy efficiency, housing policy, digital transformation of the construction sector, and support for sustainable renovation of the building stock. The National Recovery and Resilience Plan provides for significant investments in these areas.
Administrative services are provided through modern mechanisms, including electronic registers, geographic information systems, and transparent procedures for accessing information. The ministry maintains an active policy for preventing corruption practices.
Regional development is analyzed through the prism of the socio-economic profiles of the six NUTS 2 regions - North Central, Northeast, Northwest, South Central, Southeast, and Southwest.
Priority projects include the development of unified registries for property, spatial planning, and electronic systems for territorial development management. Digital transformation is seen as a key factor for modernizing the public sector.
International cooperation is realized through participation in European platforms, such as the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities and the Committee of the Regions, which ensures the integration of Bulgarian territorial policies with pan-European standards.
