The alarm was raised at about 10.55pm. Prosecutor Ilieva-Stoyanova said it has so far been established that the 20-year-old driver of the Opel, who was heading from Pleven to Yasen, crossed into the oncoming lane and hit the BMW.
The BMW's 18-year-old driver and its 21-year-old front passenger died. In the Opel, a 20-year-old woman in the front right seat and a 20-year-old man in the back seat also died.
The Opel driver was taken to the neurosurgery clinic at Pleven's Dr Georgi Stranski hospital. His condition is stable, the hospital told BTA.
The prosecutor's office has opened pre-trial proceedings. The first step in the investigation is an examination of the crash site, which is still going on.
