Bulgaria Wins Bid to Host the 25th International Geography Olympiad (iGeo)
Bulgaria has officially won the right to organize the 25th International Geography Olympiad (iGeo), which will take place in the summer of 2029. Burgas was selected as the host after a competitive race against cities like Porto Seguro (Brazil) and Nicosia (Cyprus).
"Burgas proves once again that it can host world-class events," stated the city's mayor, Dimitar Nikolov.
The bid is the result of joint efforts by the Faculty of Geology and Geography at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", the Municipality of Burgas, the Ministry of Education and Science, and the National Association of Olympic Teams in Natural Sciences. The initiative was realized thanks to Assoc. Prof. Dimitar Zhelev and Assoc. Prof. Kaloyan Tsvetkov.
Why is 2029 a key year?
- Jubilee: Celebrating 25 years since Bulgaria's first participation in iGeo (2004).
- Geo-Decade: The finale of the national initiative "Geo-Decade 2020–2029".
- Prestige: Establishing our country as a leading force in geographical sciences.
The International Geography Olympiad brings together the best young geographers, and the choice of Burgas highlights the city's role as a modern scientific and educational hub.
