Local authorities in Burgas are undertaking a large-scale initiative to improve educational accessibility in urban schools. A special project aims to transform Secondary School "Yordan Yovkov" into a modern and inclusive educational institution that fully meets contemporary standards of architectural accessibility.
The school building, constructed in the distant 1979, has so far not had the necessary facilities for students with physical disabilities. Currently, four students with disabilities face serious obstacles in moving around the educational institution, with one of them being completely deprived of the opportunity to physically attend classes.
The developed large-scale infrastructure project provides for the construction of a modern elevator and comprehensive renovation of the surrounding spaces. The total value of the intervention amounts to 160,000 leva, with the Ministry of Education covering up to 50% of the funding.
Due to the limited financial capabilities of the educational institution, which is currently simultaneously performing a major renovation of the gymnasium, the Municipality of Burgas has committed to providing the remaining funds. This strategic approach ensures the full implementation of the project and the creation of a sustainable model for inclusive education.
The ultimate goal of the initiative is to ensure equal opportunities for all students, regardless of their physical abilities, and to transform the educational environment into a truly accessible space for development and personal expression.
