The party announced the meeting of the BSP National Council on its official website. It was scheduled for December last year, when the BSP Executive Bureau submitted its resignation to the chairman of the party's National Council, Atanas Zafirov. The decision came after the resignation of the government on December 11, accepted unanimously by the National Assembly.

“The members of the leadership of the left took this decision as an act of collective responsibility, with the clear understanding that in this important moment for the state and the party, the most important thing is to calm the situation and lead the party through the upcoming challenges,” said BSP.

“We were all aware that BSP would pay a political price for the decision we made at the beginning of 2025 – to participate in joint governance with two parties that are ideologically very different from us,” said the party chairman Atanas Zafirov in an interview with "Duma" newspaper, distributed by the BSP press center.
