The government should not resign under any circumstances at the present moment, GERB leader Boyko Borisov told journalists in the corridors of the National Assembly. According to him, a possible collapse of the cabinet now would mean that in the next three to four months the country will sink into chaos, and prices will begin to rise sharply. He warned that such a development would compromise the introduction of the euro from January 1 and Bulgaria risks becoming the first country whose next cabinet will request to leave the Eurozone. The leader of GERB emphasized that if work is not done publicly and openly, "as GERB has always done", the party will not be able to defend its signature under the government.
Borisov described the current political situation as a return to the starting point – a minority government supported by "DPS-The New Beginning", without a commitment from their side to participate in parliamentary committees or hold management positions. He recalled that during yesterday's meeting of the Joint Governance Council, DPS leader Delyan Peevski agreed with all his proposals, and then Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov announced them publicly. The Prime Minister has already stated that the cabinet will do what is necessary to make the budget consensual, including through corrections agreed with the coalition partners and social partners.
Borisov emphasized that the opposition in parliament has declared the entry into the Eurozone as a given, but according to him, this is precisely due to the actions of GERB and the government, who have insisted on a coordinated and clear report on the fulfillment of the criteria. He pointed to the fight against smuggling, the various fraud schemes and VAT violations as key factors for the improved collection. According to the data he cited, the National Revenue Agency and the "Customs" Agency collected over BGN 8 billion and 600 million more compared to the previous period, which, according to him, cannot be an argument for requesting the government's resignation, but on the contrary – shows the effectiveness of the control authorities.
In a comment on the protest held in Sofia on Monday against the draft budget for 2026, Borisov pointed out that he divides it into two parts and congratulates the citizens for the first part, "because they did a great job". The discontent filled the space between the Presidency, the parliament and the Council of Ministers, and in the later hours in the capital there were riots, as the organizers were from "We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria". The leader of GERB recalled that from the first day of the budget discussion, all MPs from the party who had spoken had stated that the project was weak, compromising and coalitionary, and no one wanted to defend it."
According to him, it was the protest that played a "very good role" for GERB, because together with the partners, employers' organizations and trade unions, the process of discussing the budget was returned publicly to the state in which it should have been about a month and a half ago. He specified that in order to achieve a more balanced budget, the government will again proceed to reduce capital expenditures in order to limit the deficit and preserve the goals for the Eurozone.
Commenting on the actions of the police during the protest, Borisov stated that the law enforcement agencies had done "a very good job". He categorically rejected the demands for the resignation of the Minister of Interior Daniel Mitov, which were raised by opposition political forces. According to him, if the police had acted differently, the situation would have resembled the events of the summer of 2020, when the protests and tensions led to a discussion of the actions of the security departments at meetings of the Council of Ministers.
