Boyko Borisov met three foreign MEPs today to discuss rising tension in the Black Sea and drone attacks on merchant ships, the GERB leader said on Facebook.
The guests were Angelika Winzig of Austria, Sven Simon of Germany and Jacek Protas of Poland. Fellow MEPs Andrey Novakov and Emil Radev invited them to Bulgaria.
Borisov said the problem now reaches beyond the region, because the drones directly threaten the security of Bulgaria and Europe. He said Bulgaria is a member of the EU and NATO, so the Black Sea must be protected by joint action.
"I said clearly that the Black Sea is not a place for geopolitical fence-sitting," Borisov wrote.
He said the risks in the region demand more from the cabinet than silence, hesitation and a reaction only after the next incident. Without a clear political position, the national interest is not protected, the GERB leader added.
Borisov called his party's position clear and consistent. GERB has no doubts about Bulgaria's place: a strong Europe, a strong NATO and a clear defence of the national interest.
"Bulgaria must be an active player in shaping European security policy, not a passive observer," Borisov said.
