As of January 16, 2026, the total volume of Bulgarian leva in cash circulation amounts to 13 billion BGN, representing a withdrawal of about 58% compared to the beginning of 2025, the BNB announced.
Euro banknotes and euro coins worth over 4.3 billion euros have been put into circulation. Compared to January 9, their value has increased by about 1.2 billion euros.
The process of exchanging leva for euros is proceeding normally, in accordance with the current regulatory framework. The cash desks of the BNB and the territorial divisions of “Drujestvo za kasovi uslugi” AD are working overtime on Saturdays (January 17, 24 and 31, 2026).
Credit institutions provide free exchange of leva for euros during the first six months of 2026. For amounts over 30,000 BGN, a prior request is required. Identification is carried out with an ID card. A declaration of origin of funds is required only when exchanging an amount of 5000 euros or more.
