Relatives and supporters of Sungurlare mayor Dimitar Gavazov are protesting outside the regional police directorate (ODMVR) in Burgas. They say his arrest is unlawful.
Police arrested Gavazov yesterday in a special operation by the organised crime agency (GDBOP) and the State Agency for National Security (DANS) in the municipality. The raids covered Sungurlare and Burgas. The first unofficial reports did not say how many people had been detained.

The investigation is into suspected breaches in public procurement. Two others were detained besides the mayor: the official in charge of procurement and the municipality's auditor. GDBOP and DANS officers carried out searches at the municipal administration building and seized documents.
Officials have not said whether the detainees have been charged.
The mayor was questioned at the district police department in Sungurlare. Officers took him out through the back door while journalists waited at the front, then drove him to the regional police directorate in Burgas.
