Relatives and friends said goodbye to Martin Velev
In the capital's "Saint Sophia" church, relatives, friends, and colleagues said goodbye to Martin Velev – the son of the president of the Bulgarian Olympic Committee, Vesela Lecheva. The funeral took place on July 14, when the family sent him on his final earthly journey with deep sorrow and gratitude for the years shared.
The service began in the early afternoon, and relatives, childhood friends, and sports and public figures gathered in the church to pay their final respects to the 36-year-old man. The atmosphere was quiet and intimate, without unnecessary display – many preferred to leave flowers and pray silently rather than give speeches.
The tragic death of Martin Velev
Martin Velev died tragically on July 10 in a jet ski accident in Greece. According to local authorities, he was injured while maneuvering near "Zografou" beach on the Sithonia peninsula in Halkidiki and was pulled from the sea in critical condition, but medical efforts were unable to save his life.
A rescue operation involving divers located Martin at a significant depth, after which he was transported to a health center in the area. Doctors confirmed his death, and initial data indicate that it was an accident while riding a jet ski.
Family and friends on him
In their message, his loved ones described Martin Velev as a beloved son, husband, father, friend, and colleague, a man who left a lasting mark on the lives of all who knew him. They shared that he was able to unite people around him and approach both his family and his professional commitments with attention and support.
Martin's friends describe him as a "man from another era," who quietly helped sports and supported initiatives related to his favorite club and the development of Bulgarian athletes. On social media, dozens of people posted personal memories and photos, insisting that he be remembered for his kindness, calmness, and willingness to help.
A wave of condolences to the family
The tragic news caused a strong reaction in sports and public circles – numerous condolences were sent to Vesela Lecheva and the family by the Bulgarian Olympic Committee, sports clubs, colleagues, and friends. Many of them emphasized that the loss comes only a few years after the death of his father, Manol Velev, and is a severe trial for his loved ones.
The family expressed their gratitude for the support and respect shown in the days following the tragedy, asking the public to preserve the memory of Martin Velev through good deeds and care for the people around us. For them, he remains not only a son and a father but also an example of a dignified and modest presence that continues to inspire his friends even after his passing.
