Is the Decticus albifrons dangerous?
Recent days have sparked public interest regarding the appearance of large grasshoppers in populated areas. According to the Risk Assessment Center on Food Chain (RACFC), the Decticus albifrons poses no threat to humans, pets, or agricultural produce.
The species is not poisonous, does not attack people, and does not carry diseases.
How to identify the species?
- Size: Adult individuals reach 32 to 40 mm.
- Appearance: The coloration varies from brownish-grey to brownish-yellow, with characteristic white stripes on the wings.
- Anatomy: They possess powerful jaws and long wings, making them excellent flyers. Females have a saber-shaped ovipositor reaching 2 cm.
Behavior and habitat
This is a Mediterranean species that prefers hot and dry regions. Their presence in cities during the summer is due to their seasonal activity and proximity to dry grassy areas. They are active from June to the end of October.
Measures when encountered
It is important to emphasize that mass disinsection is not required. If you find a grasshopper in your home:
- Do not crush it or catch it with bare hands.
- Use a suitable container to carefully move it outside.
- Do not destroy the insects, as they are not economically significant pests.
