Bulgaria strengthens its role in European ocean science
Bulgaria has confirmed its readiness to participate in the new European initiative for ocean observation. The Minister of Education and Science, Prof. Georgi Valchev, held a meeting with the Director-General of DG Maritime Affairs and Fisheries at the EC, Charlina Vitcheva, to discuss future cooperation.
"No single country could cope with global challenges alone. This requires pooling scientific capacity and infrastructure," stated Prof. Valchev.
Key highlights from the meeting:
- Scientific infrastructure: The research vessel "St. St. Cyril and Methodius" positions Bulgaria as a key player in collecting data from the Black Sea to Antarctica.
- European Ocean Pact: Scientific research is a fundamental pillar for sustainable development and the protection of the marine environment.
- International network: Participation in the initiative will allow Bulgarian scientists to work actively on large-scale international projects.
According to Prof. Christo Pimpirev, oceans play a critical role in climate change, and changes in ocean currents directly affect the climate on land. Collaborative work within the EU is of crucial importance for understanding these processes.
