On July 8, 2025, the European Parliament achieved a historic decision by supporting Bulgaria's membership in the eurozone with an impressive 531 votes "in favor". Deputy Eva Maidel from GERB/EPP was a key rapporteur on the procedure that officially opened the way to introducing the single European currency.
The Finance Ministers of the European Union in the ECOFIN format subsequently confirmed Bulgaria's readiness to transition to the euro, based on detailed reports from the European Commission and the European Central Bank from June 4.
The Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) has consistently defended the view of significant advantages from joining the eurozone. Among the expected benefits are the elimination of currency exchange fees, easier cross-border payments, and increased price transparency.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the symbolic significance of the moment: "Bulgaria, the euro is coming! On January 1, 2026, the country will become the 21st state in the eurozone. This is more than a new currency - this is a true achievement."
Valdis Dombrovskis, Commissioner for Economic Affairs, added that the transition to the euro will create conditions for greater competitiveness of Bulgarian goods and services, and will provide a more stable economic environment.
To support businesses during this transitional period, BCCI developed a special information section on its official website. The platform provides detailed instructions, guidelines, regulatory documents, and a Q&A module related to the introduction of the euro.
Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova described the events as a "success for all Bulgarian citizens". She announced a plan to conduct over 100 information events throughout the country to familiarize the public with the upcoming changes.
Luis de Guindos from the European Central Bank pointed out that Bulgaria's accession is proof of the viability of the Monetary Union and its importance for Europe's economic and monetary policy.
The official conversion rate is set at 1 euro = 1.95583 leva. Citizens and businesses can now use an online calculator to facilitate currency conversion.
Among the key benefits, experts point to better access to financing, stimulation of trade and investment, and the creation of new jobs. Membership in the eurozone will provide Bulgaria with a more significant role in European financial institutions.
Danish Minister Stefani Losse, who chairs the EU Council, congratulated Bulgaria on the "enormous achievement", emphasizing the in-depth analysis and intensive preparation over the years.
