The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) has banned and prepared for destruction 2876.3 kilograms of food, 323.3 liters of soft drinks, and 402 eggs following a series of 6318 intensified inspections. The control activities, conducted between June 29 and September 11, 2026, resulted in the issuance of 1391 orders and the filing of 110 reports for administrative violations. During the inspections, measures were imposed to partially or fully suspend the operations of 27 establishments.
The Agency's inspections cover food trade, catering services, mobile and seasonal outlets, as well as catering services in hotels and tourist resorts with "all-inclusive" systems. The focus has been placed on the production and distribution of ice cream, as well as on facilities providing meals for children, the BFSA reported.
Inspectors identified failures to comply with hygiene standards and improper storage of products. Other common violations include trading food without mandatory registration, offering goods with expired shelf lives or lacking information regarding their origin, as well as labeling errors or providing misleading information through imitation products.

Media outlets recall that with the start of the new school year, the BFSA has already launched inspections in school buffets and cafeterias. Between September 14 and October 14, 2026, inspections will focus on all kindergartens, school cafeterias, and buffets, as well as catering companies supplying food to schools, including all facilities governed by the Food Act located on educational institution premises.
