Sofia police detained three individuals with criminal records for purchasing high-quality counterfeit 200 euro banknotes in the 'Ovcha Kupel' district.

Police operation uncovers network for counterfeit euros

In the course of a specialized operation by the 'Economic Police' department, the Sofia Directorate of Internal Affairs (SDVR) detained three people suspected of purchasing counterfeit 200 euro banknotes. The information was confirmed at a briefing by the director of SDVR, Chief Commissioner Lyubomir Nikolov.

'The three detainees were located in the Sofia district of 'Ovcha Kupel'. They all have criminal records,' Nikolov told journalists. He emphasized the high quality of the counterfeits, which are of interest not only to Bulgarian but also to foreign law enforcement agencies.

'The quality of these banknotes is extremely high and is of interest to many services, not just Bulgarian ones,' commented the Chief Commissioner.

Nikolov emphasized that with the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Prosecutor's Office have identified the fight against the production of counterfeit currency as a top priority in their activities.

The investigation continues, with additional details expected on the scale of the operation and possible international connections of the criminal group.
