Strict remand measure following the incident in Burgas
The Appellate Court has upheld the remand measure of "detention in custody" for 19-year-old Nikolay Asenov from the village of Galabets. The young man is accused of a serious traffic accident that occurred on July 18 on Burgas's "Hristo Botev" Boulevard, which led to the fatal death of a 47-year-old woman.
"I was not cautious; what happened was not intentional. I told my parents to help the woman as much as they can so we could keep her alive," the defendant stated before the magistrates.
The court's motives
- Reasonable suspicion: The panel of judges accepted that the evidence collected so far points to Asenov's involvement in the crime.
- Risk of flight: The court assessed that there is a real danger that the defendant could go into hiding or commit a new crime if released.
With this decision, the Appellate Court leaves the ruling of the first instance in effect, and the most severe remand measure remains in force.
