Former Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Andriy Parubiy was shot and killed in Lviv, Ukrainian authorities announced. The dramatic event, which shook the country, occurred against a backdrop of continuing tension and conflict that Ukraine has been involved in for years.

The murder was committed on Saturday, around noon local time, in the Frankivskyi district of Lviv. According to official reports, police received a call about the shooting in the early afternoon. It remains unclear for now whether the perpetrator has been apprehended, leaving many questions about the motives and circumstances of the crime.

The death of the 54-year-old Parubiy is particularly significant given his role in Ukraine's recent history. He was one of the key figures in the "Maidan" movement, which played a decisive role in changing the country's political course in 2014.

This movement, which advocated for closer ties with the European Union, led to the ousting of then pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych and profoundly changed Ukraine's geopolitical orientation. Parubiy's participation in these events made him a symbol of the country's aspiration for European integration and independence from Russian influence.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his deep outrage over the incident

In an official statement, he called the murder "a terrible murder" and offered condolences to Parubiy's family and loved ones. This tragic loss is a heavy blow not only to the political elite but also to the entire Ukrainian nation, which sees the assassination as another encroachment on its stability.
