Police have detained Sungurlare mayor Dimitar Gavazov as part of a public procurement investigation. He was questioned at the district police station, then taken to the regional police directorate in Burgas.
Officers from the organised crime agency GDBOP and the State Agency for National Security (DANS) entered the town hall early in the day and took documents and other material. Gavazov was not there. He was in Sofia. Earlier today he said no council staff had been detained. So far, no one else from the administration has been held.

Reporters waited for him outside the police station, but he left through the back of the building. Many police officers, along with gendarmerie officers and their vehicles, were gathered near the district station.
Town hall staff say they do not know why the checks are being carried out. DANS gave no details of the investigation.
Gavazov has been mayor since the 2023 local elections. He ran for the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) and won in the first round with 55.83% of the vote. Before that, he was deputy mayor of Sungurlare. He is a forestry engineer by training and graduated from the University of Forestry in Sofia.
