A 68-year-old man was found dead this morning in the square by the fountains in the centre of Sredets. Police cordoned off the area.

A witness reported the case. He said he saw police teams and an ambulance in the square at about 8am, and that the body by the fountains was covered with blue plastic sheeting.

Unofficially, the cause was a fall. The man is said to have tripped on a kerb and fallen almost 1.5 metres onto the paving stones in front of the fountains. He died of a head injury from the impact.

Because of the heavy police presence, rumours of a murder spread among residents. There is no official confirmation of that version.
