Bulgaria's big supermarket chains will face checks at their warehouses. The food safety agency (BFSA), the consumer protection commission (KZP) and the national revenue agency (NAP) will carry them out together.

The three bodies say the checks are part of joint action to protect consumers and make sure goods are sold fairly.

BFSA will check where food comes from, whether it can be traced, whether it is safe, whether it meets quality rules and how it is stored. It will review documents and take samples for lab tests.

KZP will look for unfair trading practices and for false or misleading information about the origin, features and prices of goods. It will also watch for unjustified price rises.

NAP will check whether tax and social security rules are followed. It will monitor how goods with a high fiscal risk are declared in advance, and compare what was declared with the stock in the warehouses and with the documents.

NAP will also check whether the goods really arrived at the firms' warehouses, and trace them along the supply chain to the final recipient.
