International organizations are uniting efforts to improve healthcare for Ukrainian refugees in Bulgaria.
The Ministry of Health in Bulgaria is partnering with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the World Health Organization (WHO) within the framework of the European program "EU4Health". The goal is to provide better access to health services for Ukrainian refugees residing in the country, through the training of mediators, the creation of communication networks, and special programs for immunization and prevention.
Over 205,000 Ukrainian refugees still under temporary protection in Bulgaria
According to the latest UNHCR report, from the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022 until June 2025, over 205,000 people have been registered and received temporary protection in Bulgaria. The agency emphasizes the need to expand integration programs, especially in smaller municipalities, and to prioritize attention to women and children.
Expansion of UNHCR support for Ukrainian refugees in Bulgaria
The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is scaling up its assistance to over 100,000 Ukrainian citizens who have found refuge in Bulgaria. Through collaboration with state and civil society partners, UNHCR is establishing a network of "Compass Centers" in key cities, focused on integrating refugees in the areas of education, employment, healthcare, and legal affairs.
Improvement in the asylum system in Bulgaria - reduction of missing refugees
The data shows a significant decrease in the number of refugees who discontinue the asylum procedure in Bulgaria, from 48% in 2023 to 39% in 2024. This is due to improved procedures, quality measures, and the limitation of abuses in the system.
