A 62-year-old woman from Dobrich died on the spot when her car collided with a truck on the road past the village of Bilka, heading toward Daskotna. The regional police directorate in Burgas said the crash was reported at around 6:32 pm.
The woman who died owned the car, an Opel Astra registered in Dobrich. The truck, a DAF registered in Varna, was driven by a 57-year-old man from the village of Avren, in Varna province.
The car's body was crushed in the crash, and rescue crews had to cut it open to pull out the woman's body. There's no word yet on the truck driver's condition, and no reports of any other injuries.
Police shut down the road while rescue teams worked and investigators carried out their inspection. Traffic between Varna and Burgas is now running through the Rishki Pass instead of the Aitos Pass. The Burgas police directorate warned drivers traveling between the northern and southern Black Sea coast to expect the detour and longer journey times.
What caused the crash is still not clear, and police have no early theory yet about how either driver was behaving. It's also not known whether the truck driver has been tested for alcohol or drugs.
The Burgas police directorate has opened a pre-trial investigation. Investigators still need to examine the scene to work out the path each vehicle took, the exact point of impact, and the other details of what happened before the crash.
