Strong wind tore part of the roof off apartment block No. 8 in the Emirovski district of Aytos, BGNES reported. The area around the building has been cordoned off.

There are no reports of anyone being hurt or needing medical help.

The gusts blew away part of the roof structure and left a section of the building open. Police and an emergency service have received calls about the damage. The area around the block was then cordoned off because more pieces of the roof could fall.

There is no information that residents were evacuated. There are also no official figures on how strong the wind was.

It is not yet clear how much of the roof is exposed or whether the torn-off pieces fell near the entrances. It is also unknown whether parked cars or other structures around the block were damaged.

There is no information on whether people in the affected flats have asked for help to cover their homes temporarily. It is also unclear whether specialists have already inspected the structure and assessed the damage.

It has yet to be decided what needs to be done to restore the roof.

Aytos council has been renovating the Emirovski district for several years. According to the council, the work covers road surfaces, pavements, car parks, spaces between blocks, water supply and street lighting. This work has nothing to do with the roof that came off.

Similar weather has disrupted normal life in Aytos and neighbouring municipalities before. In November 2023, media reported strong wind that left dozens of towns and villages in the Aytos, Karnobat, Ruen and Sungurlare area without power. The bad weather also hit roads and made travel harder in parts of southeast Bulgaria. There are no official wind speed measurements for the current incident that would allow a comparison with earlier storms.
