Miroslav Draganov, a pupil at the Akad. Nikola Obreshkov maths and science school in Burgas, has won a gold medal at the 19th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics in Hanoi, Vietnam, the education ministry said.
All 5 Bulgarian pupils are coming home with medals – 2 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze. The ministry called the result remarkable.
The other gold went to Svetoslav Arabov from the Dr Petar Beron maths school in Varna. Martin Nedev from the Akad. Boyan Petkanchin maths and science school in Haskovo and Krasimir Stankov from the Baba Tonka maths school in Ruse took silver, while Anton Stoyanov, also from the Varna school, won bronze.
The team travelled with its leaders Nikola Karavasilev of the Union of Astronomers in Bulgaria and Miroslav Radomirov of the physics faculty at Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski.
The pupils competed in 3 rounds – theory, observation and data analysis. About 320 pupils from dozens of countries took part in the olympiad.
Turkey will host the olympiad next year.
