Scientists: Reels and TikTok Harm the Brain Five Times Faster Than Alcohol

Social networks and online content have long been an integral part of daily life, but according to scientists interviewed by Forbes Young, the negative effect now outweighs the benefits. Studies show that watching short videos like Reels and TikTok affects the brain five times more strongly and harmfully compared to alcohol.

Experts point out that this content creates psychological dependence, leads to reduced concentration, and can cause emotional disorders. Biologists find structural changes in the brain – especially in areas controlling pleasure, decisions, and emotional regulation.

Psychologists explain that constant comparison with idealized images leads to unrealistic expectations, low self-esteem, and a tendency towards procrastination and eating disorders. Short videos trigger reward centers but decrease cognitive control – the ability to focus and maintain prolonged attention. The result is clip-based thinking: processing information in fragments rather than as a whole.

Specialists compare such content to «informational fast food» that provides instant pleasure but does not develop the mind. Longer videos stimulate hippocampus work, strengthen memory and analytical thinking.

Due to increasing risks, the Australian government has already banned children under 16 from using social networks.
