Three members of one family died at the port of Piraeus in Greece on the evening of Sunday, October 25, when their car fell into the sea from the quay just after it left a ferry.
The dead are the 82-year-old driver, his wife and their 45-year-old son.
The family had arrived on the ferry Diagoros. Shortly after 8.30pm, the car drove off the ship near terminal E2 and plunged into the water.
The rescue began at once. The Greek coast guard, specialist divers and three ambulances took part, and private boats and other vessels in the port joined the search.
Rescuers pulled out the son first. He was already dead. The parents were trapped in the sunken car and were found inside it. Early reports say both had their seat belts fastened. They were also brought out dead.
The car, a grey Toyota RAV4, was then towed out of the water.
The main theory is that heavy rain left the driver unable to get his bearings. He did not see the edge of the quay and took a wrong turn. Greek authorities are looking into the order of events and how the car went off the quay.
Early reports gave different ages for the woman: 72, 74 and 79. Later reports say she was 79.
Updated (26.10, 10:52): The mother who died is 72, not 79 as first reported, Greek media say. That also means the claim that later reports gave her age as 79 no longer stands.
