The Bulgarian national tennis team achieved a historic victory, securing a place in the World Group qualifiers of the "Davis Cup"!
After a dramatic match that ended 3-2, the "lions" prevailed over Finland on the courts of TK "Lokomotiv" in Plovdiv, etching their names in the history of Bulgarian tennis.
The atmosphere was electrifying – the noise of the crowd, the tension of each serve, everything contributed to an unforgettable tennis spectacle.
Absolute hero for Bulgaria
The absolute hero for Bulgaria proved to be Alexander Vasilev, only 18 years old, whose talent blew the crowd away. He won both of his singles matches, demonstrating composure and skill worthy of a much more experienced player. His remarkable performance is even more impressive, considering that just a week earlier he played in the final of the junior US Open. In the decisive fifth match against former world No. 37 Emil Ruusuvuori, Vasilev secured victory after 7:6 (5), 6:4, in a match lasting two hours. The young Bulgarian"s incredible concentration was evident; he did not allow a single break in his serve throughout the entire match. A single break in the middle of the second set proved sufficient for his categorical victory.
On Saturday, Vasilev also achieved a second categorical victory in two sets, this time over Otto Virtanen.
Teamwork
However, the team"s success is not solely due to the young star. The pair of Piotr Nestorov and Alexander Donski also contributed with a dramatic victory with 2:1 sets (6:4, 1:6, 7:6 (1)) over Harri Heliövaara and Otto Virtanen, completing the picture of team synergy and determination.
The victory qualified Bulgaria for the playoffs to enter the World Group, a competition where the elite of world tennis gather. These playoffs will be held in February 2026, giving Bulgaria a chance to face the strongest teams on the planet.
The success is the result of the hard work of the entire team:
- Piotr Nestorov (22 years old)
- Alexander Donski (27 years old)
- Yanaki Milev (21 years old)
- Alexander Vasilev (18 years old)
- Ivan Ivanov (16 years old)
with captain Valentin Dimov and assistant coach Tikomir Grozdanov.
We look forward to watching Bulgaria_q_s performance on the world stage.
