The Lyuben Groys Theatre College has opened its third school year in Burgas with a new rector — actor Dimitar Marinov, who has moved back to Bulgaria after years in the US.
Students performed stage sketches at the opening. For first-year students, it marks the start of their professional theatre training.
Marinov said first-year students feel the most excitement, but as rector he is a first-year student too. "Lyuben Groys and Burgas convinced me to come back and be here. I bought a one-way ticket from Los Angeles," he said. He said the training shapes not just actors but people, and what matters more than how good the students become as actors is how good they are as people.
Mayor Dimitar Nikolov welcomed the students and teachers and wished them a successful school year. "Over these three years you have given Burgas more colour, emotion and creativity," he said. Nikolov said young people can now study acting in Burgas, grow their talent and take part in the city's cultural life.
The college started in Burgas three years ago. Besides training young actors, it also holds meetings with well-known names from theatre and film.
