Medical students and young doctors held another protest, calling for better working conditions, higher pay and better conditions for specialist training. The initiative "Future in Bulgaria" organised the rally.

The protesters say the health system lacks action and reform. They believe its state affects everyone in Bulgaria.

How it all started: Health minister offers €1,550 pay for trainee doctors on state-funded places

The young doctors want changes to Ordinance No. 1, which governs medical specialisation. They also want higher pay for trainee specialists and other medical staff. They say young doctors need real prospects for development at home, so that they stay in Bulgaria instead of going abroad.

Minister Ivkova spoke before the protest. She said she respects their right to protest because the country is a democracy, and called their demands fair. According to the minister, they will be met. Ivkova said she hoped the demands and the energy of young people would not be used for political purposes.

"Because my commitment is to their future, not to somebody's political campaign," Ivkova said.

Konstantin Kostov, who took part in the protest, said the protesters want changes to Ordinance No. 1, which regulates specialisation. They also want higher pay for trainee specialists and other medical staff.

Zina Grachanlieva said medical students and Bulgarian doctors deserve to be valued by the state for their work, which is far from easy. She said they deserve recognition for their many years of study and the effort they have put in over that time.

Dr Beloslava Tomova said statistics show that many colleagues leave after graduating to seek opportunities to develop in other countries.

"A great many colleagues also give up on medicine altogether," she said.
