Work has begun on a new four-storey extension to Ivan Vazov school in Pomorie.
The money comes from a government scheme to build, extend and upgrade school buildings, and the project's application was approved. Crews started clearing and fencing off the site in August.
The extension will house the school's primary grades. It will have classrooms, a dining hall, a cloakroom, storage rooms, changing rooms with toilets, a meeting room, a supply room and a resource classroom. People with disabilities will be able to use the building, which will have a toilet built for them and a lift in a new stairwell serving every floor.
The building will have a solid reinforced concrete frame and will meet current energy efficiency rules. The school's current building doesn't have room for all this, so the new block will give it extra teaching space to look after pupils throughout the school day.
Back in September 2023, Pomorie's town council agreed to hand the school the right to update the investment project for the extension and partial rebuild.
"Our children deserve the best, and any effort in that direction deserves full support," said Pomorie mayor Ivan Alexiev. He wished head teacher Kazakova and her team success and promised the town's help.
The school is one of the largest in the area and has already had several rounds of repairs, including a refurbished gym and a new STEM classroom. In recent years, the town has also put money into sports facilities, high-tech classrooms and refurbishing existing school rooms.
More than 2,200 pupils are enrolled in Pomorie's schools for the 2026/2027 school year, 233 of them starting first grade.
