Slovak state leader Robert Fico caused diplomatic tension by categorically refusing to support the 18th sanctions package of the European Union against the Russian Federation. His position is based on the need to guarantee Slovak economic priorities.

During an official statement in the Slovak capital Bratislava, the politician emphasized his principled position: "Our membership in the union does not automatically mean neglecting national interests". Fico insists on a more differentiated approach to introducing restrictive measures that takes into account the specifics of smaller European economies.

His decision temporarily blocks the adoption of the sanctions mechanism, whose main goal is to further limit Russian financial capabilities for continuing military actions in Ukraine. Diplomatic circles in Brussels confirm that negotiations continue, seeking a quick compromise solution.

Expert analyses indicate that Fico is known for his relatively more moderate position towards Moscow. Despite his skepticism towards sanctions policy, the Slovak prime minister categorically affirms his support for Ukraine's territorial integrity.

Sources from European and Slovak media emphasize that achieving full consensus among all member states remains a key challenge for the effective implementation of sanctions mechanisms.
