A court in Plovdiv has kept a 14-year-old boy in custody over the killing of his 45-year-old mother on 9 October. The defence has appealed, and the Court of Appeal will hear the case on 20 October.
This report follows our earlier story about a 45-year-old woman found dead in Plovdiv, whose death police are investigating as murder.
The woman was killed in a home on Brezovska street in the Karshiyaka district. The boy himself alerted the authorities. She died from multiple stab wounds, the Plovdiv regional prosecutor's office said.
Prosecutors say they are considering a personal motive but gave no details. So far, they have found no evidence of earlier serious conflicts between the son and his mother. The Plovdiv regional prosecutor's office is overseeing the investigation.
The woman lived in Stara Zagora and had two children, a daughter and a son. She studied food technology in Plovdiv. She and her former husband were together for more than two decades. He previously worked in farming, growing various crops.
In 2009 the family moved into hotels and restaurants. They considered starting a business in Bansko and Sunny Beach, but chose Stara Zagora, where they ran a restaurant. She took part in the family ventures and looked after the children.
The children played sports at their parents' urging. The daughter did rhythmic gymnastics and ballet, and the son did gymnastics. The daughter is now a student in Plovdiv. The boy moved to the city recently after being accepted at a prestigious school. Until then he had lived with his grandparents in Stara Zagora.
Relatives and friends describe the woman as warm, hardworking and ambitious, with a love of family, travel and time with friends. Acquaintances remember her as determined and a fighter who did not give up her goals easily. Her friends say that after the split with her husband she kept close ties with the people around her.
Her social media posts show that she loved travelling, discovering new places, nature and hunting. Since her death, her profiles have filled with messages, shared photos and memories from friends. People who knew her struggle to accept what happened and cannot make sense of the charges against her son.
