A Bulgarian court has kept a 20-year-old man, named as D.T., in custody. Vratsa district court rejected his request to swap pre-trial detention for a lighter measure. He is charged over a crash in Mezdra that killed two teenagers.
Prosecutors say that on 25 June 2026 he was driving at least 40km/h over the speed limit in Mezdra. He crossed into the oncoming lane without overtaking anyone and with nothing blocking his path. His car then hit a motorcycle travelling correctly on its own side of the road. The 17-year-old motorcyclist and a 16-year-old girl riding with him were killed. Mezdra council declared three days of mourning.
Judges said there are reasonable grounds to suspect the defendant was involved in the crime, and a real risk he could offend again. The detention order was issued on 27 June 2026, just over three months ago. The maximum custody period is eight months, so judges found no grounds to change it.
The offence carries a minimum 10-year prison sentence under the law. The ruling can be appealed at the Sofia Court of Appeal.
