Russia hit Ukraine overnight into Saturday 17 October with ballistic and cruise missiles and 332 drones, Ukraine's Air Force said. At least 20 people were wounded in Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia, four of them children. Russia has waged a full-scale war on Ukraine since February 2022.
Kharkiv
Fifteen people were wounded in Kharkiv, three of them children, the State Emergency Service said. Missiles hit the city.
One missile struck a warehouse in the Nemyshlianskyi district and started a fire covering about 100 sq m. The shelling also damaged nearby apartment blocks and other buildings. Four fires broke out in all, and rescuers put them out.
Zaporizhzhia
Five civilians, including a child, were wounded when a strike hit a residential area of Zaporizhzhia, regional military administration head Mykhailo Semykin said on Telegram, ArmyInform reported.
"The enemy hit an open area among residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia," Semykin wrote. Apartment blocks were damaged and cars burned. All the necessary services are at the scene helping the victims.
What Russia fired
Russia launched Iskander-M and KN-23 ballistic missiles from its Voronezh and Rostov regions and from occupied Crimea. Kh-22 and Kh-32 cruise missiles took off from the airspace over Crimea, and four Kalibr missiles were fired from Novorossiysk.
Of the 332 drones, 31 were jet-powered. By 8am, Ukrainian air defences had shot down or jammed 293 targets: the four Kalibr missiles and 289 drones. Even so, Russian weapons hit 22 locations, and debris fell on three more.
