Two Romanian F-16 jets shot down two drones over the Black Sea on the evening of 17 October after they entered Romanian airspace, Romania's defence ministry said in Bucharest.
The drones fell into Romanian territorial waters near Sulina.
Radars picked up a group of air targets about 120km east of Snake Island, flying south-west. At 17:43 two F-16s on air policing duty took off from Borcea air base, and the pilots were sent towards the targets over the sea.
The first target crossed into Romanian airspace at 17:59. Two minutes later, at 18:01, one of the jets shot it down about 25km south-east of Sulina. The second drone appeared in the same area, also at 18:01, and at 18:05 the other pilot shot it down about 20km east of Sulina.
Each pilot downed one target, and it took them 4 minutes to bring down both. Defence minister Radu Miruta said where the drones fell and that they were shot down a few minutes after entering the airspace.
The ministry calls both targets drones. The military did not say what type they were, where they came from or whether any debris was found. Who sent them, and why, has not been officially confirmed. There are no reports of injuries or of damage on land.
Tension in the Black Sea is rising after a series of attacks on commercial ships and drone incursions into the airspace of NATO states. In recent days, Romanian forces have scrambled fighter jets several times over air targets near the border with Ukraine.
Bulgaria has stepped up monitoring and air defence measures and is discussing closer coordination with Romania and Turkey.
