Mayfly Invasion in Burgas: What You Need to Know
Residents of Burgas are reporting a massive presence of mayflies in the areas around Atanasovsko Lake and Vaya Lake. The insects are literally covering terraces, windows, and cars, causing concern among citizens.
"Now is the period in which they reproduce. Their role is to mate, lay eggs, and then they die," explained ornithologist Radoslav Moldovanski.
Why do they appear and how long do they live?
According to experts, mayflies live in this phase of their development for only a few hours to a few days. Their sole purpose is reproduction. Specialists emphasize that these insects are a key element of the ecosystem.
Are they beneficial to nature?
- They serve as a primary food source for birds, fish, and bats.
- A swallow can eat up to 800 mayflies a day.
- A bat consumes up to 3,000 insects daily, including mosquitoes.
- They are bioindicators of the cleanliness and condition of water bodies.
Are they dangerous to humans?
Experts are firm – mayflies do not pose a danger to humans. They do not have a developed feeding apparatus, do not bite, and do not feed during this stage of their life. It is recommended not to use insecticides, as the chemicals can seriously harm other animal species in the area. With the change in weather conditions, the swarms will gradually disappear on their own.
