President Rumen Radev commented on a serious problem related to the maintenance of the F-16 Block 70 fighter jets, in response to a question about the plans of the Ministry of Defense. According to the head of state, the lack of sufficient ground equipment represents a critical factor for ensuring the operational readiness of the aircraft.
"Our problem is that enough ground equipment has not been delivered because the Bulgarian side has not requested it, so that the aircraft can be maintained in working order," the president emphasized.
This statement casts a shadow over the country's ability to fully utilize the capabilities of modern fighter jets.
President Radev emphasized the importance of adequate ground support. "It must be clear that the F-16 is a modern fighter with huge capabilities, but in order for us to use them, there must be reliable ground support, so that it can be maintained in operational readiness and fly," he said. This highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to maintenance to ensure the effectiveness of the air force.
Radev highlighted the circumstances that led to the current situation. "The serious problem is that in 2019, the package for logistical support and ground equipment was drastically cut in order to fit into the financial framework," he pointed out. The president also recalled his veto on the issue, which, according to him, was not related to the aircraft itself or the United States, but was dictated by concerns about the future maintenance of the fighter jets.
In light of these problems, the president appealed to the government. "I appeal to the government to conclude a new contract for integrated logistical support as soon as possible, so that the aircraft we have can fly," Radev urged.
Earlier today, President Rumen Radev opened a commemorative tennis tournament in memory of Major General Neyko Nenov. The atmosphere of the tournament, filled with memories and respect, contrasted with the responsibility that the head of state took on, addressing critical issues in the field of defense.
