Protests by public transport employees in several cities across the country begin today, with the largest one taking place in Varna. The protests are a sign of dissatisfaction with low wages and the lack of an increase.

The unions, led by the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB), are demanding an increase in incomes in the sector. They want a 5% increase in wages, which should be included through the budget extension law. They point out that those working in public transport have not received an increase, which has been given to other budget spheres.

The protests will include motorcades and blockades of important road arteries, with a section of the Asparuhov Bridge expected to be blocked in Varna. The unions warn that if their demands are not met, the protests could escalate.

The organizers acknowledge that blocking key road arteries will create serious difficulties for citizens.

The unions are also planning a larger increase upon the adoption of a regular budget - from 10% to 15%.
