Acting prosecutor general Vanya Stefanova has asked for the immunity of Bozhidar Bozhanov to be lifted, the prosecution service said. Bozhanov is deputy leader of the Democratic Bulgaria (DB) parliamentary group and is charged with misconduct in office.
Bozhanov gained immunity after the latest general election, and the case against him was put on hold. If his immunity is lifted, the Sofia City Court can pick the case up again, prosecutors said.
In a written statement, Bozhanov said he will give up his immunity as soon as the request reaches parliament. He recalled that in early September he had himself asked for a request to lift it to be made.
He says the case is a year and a half old and was fabricated. He wants it to fall apart in court as fast as possible.
Bozhanov believes Stefanova chose her moment to make the case into news. The request was filed on her last working day, three days before the presidential election.
