Burgas prosecutors have appealed against a court ruling that freed 19-year-old Nikola Burgazliev, who is charged over the quad bike crash in Sunny Beach, from custody, the prosecutor's office said. The Burgas Court of Appeal will hear the appeal.

Yesterday the Burgas Regional Court replaced his detention with house arrest, an electronic tag and a ban on leaving the country. He had spent 14 months in pre-trial detention.

The court said he had been held for a long time. It said there was no evidence that he was preparing to go into hiding or wanted to, and no sign that he could commit another crime.

Prosecutors want the stricter measure kept. The charge is a serious intentional crime, committed after using marijuana and with many traffic violations. The case is already in its final stage.

On 14 August 2025, five people were hit and injured on the pavement in the resort. One of them, a 35-year-old woman from Plovdiv, later died in hospital. Her five-year-old son was left with lasting injuries.

Minutes after the Regional Court's ruling, calls for a protest on 3 November appeared on social media. A hearing on the defendant's pre-trial measure is set for the same day.
