Professional burnout is a serious problem in Bulgaria, leading to exhaustion and loss of motivation. According to a study by the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) in six professions with increased risk, this problem threatens the competitiveness of the economy.
Economic losses and causes:
- Approximately 300 million euros annually for sick leave related to stress and burnout (data from the state and employers).
- 40% of the reasons for employee turnover are from professional burnout.
- Over 30% of errors, violations, and accidents in the workplace are related to chronic stress.
High-risk professions:
- Marketing and sales (high ambitions, self-criticism).
- ICT specialists (high complexity of tasks, overload).
- Human resources (lack of autonomy, ambiguity in powers).
- Production and tourism (high responsibility, emotional stress).
What needs to be done?
- Risk assessment for mental health and company programs for stress management.
- Putting people before processes, designing work to reduce overload.
- Encouraging autonomy and self-control, stimulating efforts.
- Flexible working arrangements, breaks and vacations, improving communications.
- Corporate programs for mental health, information campaigns.
- Additional health services, assistance from therapists, wellness programs.
- Internal volunteering and mutual assistance among employees.
The study shows that 73% of those surveyed are affected by burnout to a moderate or high degree. A systemic transformation of the working environment is needed, with an emphasis on psychological well-being and a rethinking of expectations for business effectiveness.
