The transition to the euro on January 1, 2026, in Bulgaria requires significant adjustments to the systems of commercial banks. Because of this, there will be interruptions in some banking services in the last days of 2025 and the first days of the new year. Balances in bank accounts will be automatically converted from leva to euros, and the IBAN of the accounts will remain the same, so no prior preparation or action is required from the clients.

The main technical interruption, which will affect the clients of all banks, is scheduled between 9:00 PM on December 31 and 1:00 AM after midnight on January 1. During this interval, it will not be possible to pay with a physical card at a POS terminal or on the internet, as well as to withdraw cash at an ATM. The technical interruptions of banking services are similar for most banks on the domestic market with small differences in the specified periods, necessary for the readjustment of the systems.

Most banks advise clients to have cash on hand in the hours around New Year's Eve. In January 2026, a period of dual circulation in leva and euros will be in effect. Clients should also keep in mind the deadlines for interbank transfers and transfers to the budget.
