The Council of Ministers approved additional expenditures under the 2026 budget of the Ministry of Interior, the government's press office announced. The bulk of the funds — €63,486,235 — is earmarked for implementing the model for a Centralized System for Personalizing Bulgarian ID Documents.
In addition, the government allocated another €4,500,000 for urgent repair and restoration work on a barrier-type engineering structure and the adjoining road along the Bulgarian-Turkish border.
A third sum of €3,056,470 under the Interior Ministry's 2026 budget will finance the issuance of Bulgarian identity documents. These funds cover commitments already made under contracts signed by the ministry.
This is not the first decision related to financing the project this year. In late April 2026, the caretaker cabinet decided to allocate €10,392,945 to the Interior Ministry. The money was intended for implementing the model for the Centralized System for Personalizing Bulgarian ID Documents. At that time, the funds were specifically earmarked for building and deploying the new system meant to make the document personalization process more efficient. On April 22, 2026, the caretaker government decided to update the fees for identity documents and introduced new types of documents.
