Biserka Gramatikova, a Burgas music teacher, musicologist, local historian and critic, has died. Burgas council announced her death and sent condolences to her family, friends, colleagues and students.

She spent her whole life in music, teaching and looking after the cultural memory of Burgas. For many years she taught at the Prof. Pancho Vladigerov National School of Music and Stage Arts, and generations of young musicians were her pupils.

The council said children learned from her a love of art, respect for tradition and a drive for excellence. Colleagues remember her knowledge, high standards and dedication.

As a musicologist, local historian and critic, she also protected and promoted Burgas's musical heritage.

"Burgas has lost a worthy keeper of its musical traditions, a devoted teacher and a person whose life was given to knowledge, art and young talent," said mayor Dimitar Nikolov. He said Gramatikova left a mark on the city's cultural history and in the hearts of her students across several generations.

"Her work will live on through the people she inspired," the mayor added.

In 2023, Burgas council gave her a plaque for her contribution to the development of culture and service to society. The council honoured her many years of work for the city and its spiritual community.

Her awards also include the Crystal Necklace, the highest honour of the Union of Bulgarian Musicians and Dancers.
