The main reason for the higher electricity bills during this heating season is the higher individual consumption, related to the lower temperatures in January this year compared to the same period in 2025. This became known from the words of the Deputy Minister of Energy, Krasimir Nenov, during a hearing in Parliament regarding the increased electricity bills and the numerous complaints filed about this in recent months. The hearing was at the request of “Vazrazhdane”. Nenov emphasized the energy efficiency of the building stock, pointing out that this also has a bearing on the consumption of electricity.

The inspections of the Ministry of Energy were related to the overall assessment of the technical condition, operation and maintenance of the energy facilities. In some cases of inspections, problems related to the technical safety of electricity meters were found, but they are not related to the problems reported by consumers, he said. According to him, where technical reasons have been identified, they have been eliminated, and the customers' bills will be corrected. Nenov said that the inspections should continue until the final clarification of each individual case.

The Deputy Minister added that the ministry's experts also conducted extraordinary inspections, which covered about 1000 commercial metering devices on a random basis.

He assured the MPs that for the Ministry of Energy, today's hearing is of exceptional importance. Clarifying the objective truth is of key importance in a broader sense, and it is important for restoring the citizens' trust in public service providers and in the institutions, Nenov emphasized.
