The end of the "absorption" policy
In recent years, Bulgaria has lacked a consistent state policy in agriculture. The focus was entirely on the distribution of subsidies, rather than on real development and competitiveness. Minister of Agriculture and Food Plamen Abrovski pointed out that the current model was flawed because it did not create conditions for sustainable growth.
"A key priority now is to unite small farmers and improve their access to markets," stated Abrovski.
Key measures for the sector:
- Creation of a mutual aid fund for crisis financing.
- Facilitating market access for small producers.
- Strict control over the labeling of dairy products.
- Expansion of the "Basket with Care" initiative.
Problems in livestock and the dairy sector
Abrovski identified livestock farming as the most difficult sector. The main challenge is not a lack of money, but the realization of production. High market concentration among processors creates a risk for domestic farmers, who are often displaced by cheap imported raw materials.
The Ministry is actively working on introducing clear standards to help consumers distinguish genuine Bulgarian products from imported imitations disguised as local goods.
