Farm minister Plamen Abrovski is in Brussels today and tomorrow for a meeting of EU farm and fisheries ministers, the agriculture ministry says.
Bulgaria will join Cyprus, Greece, Romania and Croatia in calling on the European Commission to fully overhaul its rules on peste des petits ruminants, a disease that hits sheep and goats. Abrovski called the rules outdated last week, telling parliament's agriculture, food and forestry committee that they leave no way to compensate farmers whose animals are stuck inside quarantine zones around outbreaks.
Day one will focus on how EU support for the Common Agricultural Policy will work after 2027. Ministers will also discuss farm markets, largely because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Fisheries come up tomorrow. Ministers will start with a draft regulation setting out the terms for EU support, covering the Common Fisheries Policy, the European Ocean Pact, and EU maritime and aquaculture policy for 2028 to 2034.
