Parliament has elected Dr. Vladimir Daskalov as Governor of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF). The decision, which grants him a mandate until March 20, 2030, followed his nomination by "Progressive Bulgaria" (PB) on August 12 of this year.
The new governor received the support of 120 members of parliament. 56 deputies voted "against," and 11 abstained. The breakdown of the "against" votes includes 27 deputies from GERB-UDF, 18 from "Democratic Bulgaria," and 11 from "Vazrazhdane." Nine representatives from "We Continue the Change," one from PB, and one from GERB-UDF voted "abstain," while the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) did not participate in the procedure. For the other candidate, Stanimir Mihaylov, nominated by "We Continue the Change," 30 deputies voted in favor, 153 voted "against," and nine abstained.
Dr. Vladimir Vasev Daskalov completed his higher medical education in 1988 at the Higher Medical Institute in Plovdiv. In 2005, he acquired a second specialty in "Military Field Surgery," and in 2012, he completed a degree in "Public Health and Health Management" at the Medical University of Sofia. His career is closely linked to the Military Medical Academy, where he headed the Operational Center in 2011 and defended his dissertation to obtain a PhD degree in 2013.
His professional path includes specializations in France and Austria. In 2021, he held the position of Deputy Director of the "St. Ivan Rilski" University Multiprofile Hospital for Active Treatment in Sofia. Later, between April and November 2022, he chaired the Board of Directors of the Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment of Hematological Diseases. Subsequently, Dr. Daskalov became the director of the "Prof. Ivan Chernozemski" Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment in Oncology, and his most recent position was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the "Acad. Ivan Penchev" University Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment in Endocrinology.
