Among working people who care for their own children, grandchildren or relatives, 79.3% say caring causes them no problems at work. That is the finding of a 2025 survey by Bulgaria's National Statistical Institute (NSI).
In all, 913,500 people look after their own children or their partner's children aged up to 14. They make up 19.7% of those surveyed, who were aged 18 to 74. Of them, 772,000 (84.5%) have a job.
About 57.4% of those who look after children use nurseries, kindergartens, after-school clubs, professional childminders or other services. Among those who do not use services for some or all of their children, 48.9% look after them alone or with their partner.
Another 463,000 people regularly care for relatives aged 15 or over who are frail, ill or disabled. Of them, 61.9% are in work.
The survey, "Reconciling Work and Family Life", is a module of the Labour Force Survey and is co-funded by the European Commission. The results are on the NSI website.
