MES proposes new options for the 2027 spring break
The Ministry of Education and Science (MES) has published a draft schedule for the 2026/2027 academic year, which allows parents to participate in a public consultation to determine the spring break.
"The MES proposal for parents to be able to choose between two options for the spring break - April 3-11 or April 30 - May 9 - is extremely commendable," commented Diyan Stamatov, Chairman of the SRSNP (Union of Employers in the System of Public Education in Bulgaria).
The proposed schedule includes:
- Christmas break: December 24, 2026 – January 3, 2027.
- Between-term break: January 30 – February 2, 2027.
- Day of the National Awakeners: November 2, 2026 (non-school day).
Diyan Stamatov emphasizes that while the idea of a choice is good, there are questions regarding the balance of teaching time. He notes that the 15 days for family reasons often overlap with the number of vacation days, which sparks discussions regarding the effectiveness of the academic schedule.
The public consultation is open for proposals over the next month, and the schedule may be adjusted according to the needs of students, parents, and teachers.
